THE head of the Yangon office of the United Nations Population Fund, Mr Daniel Baker, will serve as the interim UN resident coordinator in Myanmar until a new appointment is made to replace Mr Charles Petrie, who departed from the country on December 4, a UN source in Yangon said last week.
 

ARRIVALS of foreign visitors to Myanmar through the Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Muse gateways fell by 42.8 percent in September and October from the same period last year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

“Christmas in December, Thingyan in April and around Mayday in early May are the times when get the most visitors,” said U Maung Maung Aye, the manager of Silver View Hotel.

The 1700km Stilwell Road was built during World War II by Allied and Chinese troops under the command of US General Joseph Stilwell to link up with the 1257km Myanmar Road into China.

THE Myanmar men’s football team squeaked into the semi-final round of the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Korat, Thailand, thanks in part to Thailand’s 2-1 victory over Indonesia in the last match of the group round on Friday.
 
MYANMAR’S national shooting team finished the 24th South East Asian (SEA) Games with a medal tally of two gold medals, two silvers and a bronze, bettering their performance at the 23rd games, said a Myanmar Shooting Sport Federation official.
