Singapore calls for applications for scholarship program

By Minh Zaw and Ni Ni Myint

THE Singapore embassy in Yangon is now accepting applications for the 2008 Dr Goh Keng Swee Scholarship Program for study at Singapore’s universities with the aim of increasing the talent pool in the Asia-Pacific region.

The program, which was set up with the support of the Singaporean financial community and is administered by the Association of Banks in Singapore, provides support for three years of study for a general degree and four years for an honours degree, both at the undergraduate level.

The scholarships cover tuition, other compulsory fees, return airfare and an annual maintenance allowance. Following the completion of their studies, scholarship students must commit to working for three years for a company in Singapore or for a university-approved, Singapore-based company in their home country.

Applicants must be under 25 years of age, have acceptable English-language test scores, have a good co-curricular activities record that highlights leadership qualities, and be a passport holder from Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, China, Thailand or Vietnam.

Interested students must submit high school transcripts, results of any university-level exams and an essay with their application. Students should also attach the results of their Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if required by the university to which they are applying.

Applications must be submitted by December 31 to the Dr Goh Keng Swee Scholarship Fund, c/o Embassy of the Republic of Singapore-Myanmar, 238 Dhammazedi Road, Bahan township, Yangon.

Successful applicants will be notified in May 2008. More information about the scholarship program can be found on the internet at www.psc.gov.sg.
