UP, UP AND AWAY: A giant chicken prepares
to take flight during a hot-air balloon competition in Pyin
Oo Lwin last month. The summer resort town celebrated its
third Tazaungdine Lighting Festival from November 21 to
25, during which 75 hot-air balloons were launched. The
balloons – which took the shape of parrots, chickens,
owls, fish and elephants – cost anywhere from K500,000
to K2 million to build. Pyin Oo Lwin is striving to make
its Tazaungdine festival the biggest in the country and
this year’s was the most successful so far, according
to the event’s supervision committee chairman, U Kyaw
Htay.
