MYANMAR marked its 60th Independence Day by raising the national flag at precisely 4:28am – the exact moment of freedom from Britain in 1948 – at a pre-dawn ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw on January 4.

 

AIMING to boost tourism in the region, airlines, hotels, travel agents and national tourism organisations in Association of Southeast Asian Nations member countries have joined together to create the Visit ASEAN Pass program (VAP).

 

THE ASEAN Schools Tour 2007 made its final stop on December 13 at Basic Education High School (1) in Dagon township after visiting schools in the other nine member nations of the regional grouping.

 
THE government imposed a massive 166-fold increase last week on the fee for satellite TV licences, an official from Myanma Post and Telecommunications was reported as saying by AFP on January 2.

THE Myanmar Fisheries Federation (MFF) elected new central executive committee members for the 2008-2010 term at its 9th annual meeting in Yangon on December 30, marking the first time the federation used democratic voting methods to choose its leadership.

 
THE National Blood Centre (NBC) in Yangon honoured people who have donated blood at least 50 times in their lives, by awarding them certificates and badges at a ceremony at the University of Nursing on December 14.
 
THE Myanmar Red Cross Society held a meeting at Yangon’s Central Hotel on December 14 to review the strengths and weaknesses of its 2007 tuberculosis project.
 
“The Phnom Penh Post is currently a fortnightly newspaper and was founded by an American, Michael Hayes, in 1991. Over 17 years, The Phnom Penh Post has acquired an internationally established reputation for its independence and editorial excellence.
 
“I want to keep improving and advancing as time passes. I put more value in my own efforts and their results than in the amount of money I can make from them,”
 

“Even if the 100,000-acre plantation is successfully completed, the company plans to develop other plantations totalling between 300,000 and 400,000 acres throughout the country,”

 

The Suzuki joint venture – between the Ministry of Industry (2) and FMI – was first inked in 1997 and its terms included a 10-year permit to produce vehicles. However, FMI chairman U Theim Wai told shareholders at the mid December annual general meeting that the government had agreed to extend the permit for another decade.

 

“We built a curved roof building similar to this in the National Races Village in Thaketa township last year by using the reinforced cement (or RC) system. But this curved roof building using a steel structure is the first in Myanmar,”

 

“We have designs for all ages. For example, young people like to have specific designs, the middle-aged prefer designs that are appropriate for the workplace and older customers want comfortable clothing that covers their midriff and arms,”

This photograph of a Naga man, taken by Khin Saw Lu at the 2006 Naga New Year festival in Lahe in Sagaing Division, was awarded the K250,000 first prize at a photo competition organised in November by Skywalk Shopping Mall in Mandalay. The image beat out 400 other entries for the top prize. The contest was aimed at showcasing the cultures and traditions of Myanmar’s ethnically diverse population, according to U Kyaw Kyaw Htike, the marketing manager of the shopping mall.
