MYANMAR marked its 60th Independence Day by raising the national flag at precisely 4:28am – the exact moment of freedom from Britain in 1948 – at a pre-dawn ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw on January 4.

 

AIMING to boost tourism in the region, airlines, hotels, travel agents and national tourism organisations in Association of Southeast Asian Nations member countries have joined together to create the Visit ASEAN Pass program (VAP).

THE government imposed a massive 166-fold increase last week on the fee for satellite TV licences, an official from Myanma Post and Telecommunications was reported as saying by AFP on January 2.
 
THE Myanmar Red Cross Society held a meeting at Yangon’s Central Hotel on December 14 to review the strengths and weaknesses of its 2007 tuberculosis project.

“The main reason is that job opportunities for Myanmar workers in Malaysia have decreased by more than half in the past year,” said a spokesperson from Shwe Innwa overseas job agency, which has sent more than 15,000 workers to Malaysia since it opened in 2003.
 
“The government has granted the four acres of land requested for the new office and the building process is ready to begin,” he said at the annual meeting of the Myanmar Fishery Products Processors and Exporters Association, held last month at MFF headquarters in Yangon.
 
“No new characters have been added and the Unicode mapping has not been changed. The only change from the previous version is that the postscript names have been changed to be unique,”
 
“Job information is usually available on websites. Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower has launched a website that has information about working in Singapore for foreigners who are looking for jobs,”
 
CONSTRUCTION work on a library meant to commemorate the work of Dr Hla Pe, a writer and former professor at London University, will begin in Mawlamyine in early 2008, said U Sein Myint, the vice president of the Library Establishment Committee.
 
“I want to keep improving and advancing as time passes. I put more value in my own efforts and their results than in the amount of money I can make from them,”
 
THE Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is offering Asia Fellows Awards for scholars and professionals from Asian countries to help them carry out research projects.
