The celebration, held every year on the first day of the lunar month of Pyatho, which this year fell on January 8, is a chance for the Kayin people in Myanmar to focus on unity, perpetuation of their race and preservation of traditional culture.

 
JAKARTA – A former Thai foreign minister, Surin Pitsuwan, took the helm of Southeast Asia’s top political and economic grouping last week, saying he would keep alive the dream of the founders of the 40-year-old ASEAN.

MINISTER for Relations U Aung Kyi met Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on January 11, the fourth meeting between the two since October. The meeting at the Seinle Kantha State Guesthouse lasted for more than an hour, according to a government announcement on national television.
 
A BOMB exploded near a toilet just outside the Pyinmana Railway Station at 4:30am last Friday, killing a 35-year-old woman from Toungoo township, a local police officer said.
