The celebration, held every year on the first day of the lunar month of Pyatho, which this year fell on January 8, is a chance for the Kayin people in Myanmar to focus on unity, perpetuation of their race and preservation of traditional culture.

 
He said this year’s bazaar will be bigger than last year’s and will include attractions and activities for people of all ages, such as food and beverage stalls, game stalls, special interest stalls, children’s fun park, raffle, stage show, cash donation corner and lucky draw.
 
MINISTER for Relations U Aung Kyi met Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on January 11, the fourth meeting between the two since October. The meeting at the Seinle Kantha State Guesthouse lasted for more than an hour, according to a government announcement on national television.
 
JAKARTA – A former Thai foreign minister, Surin Pitsuwan, took the helm of Southeast Asia’s top political and economic grouping last week, saying he would keep alive the dream of the founders of the 40-year-old ASEAN.
 
A BOMB exploded near a toilet just outside the Pyinmana Railway Station at 4:30am last Friday, killing a 35-year-old woman from Toungoo township, a local police officer said.
 
“The Nagargyi mud volcano erupted first around 11:40am. At first mud lava came out and after that flames came out. The eruption lasted about 15 minutes,”

THE deputy chief of mission at the United States embassy in Yangon has advised anyone hoping to get a visa for travel to the US to be honest on their application form.

AN official from the Department of Fisheries (DOF) said last month that the department was planning a public awareness campaign aimed at educating rural residents about the importance of preserving the country’s fisher0.ies resources.

TAMIL Hindus in Myanmar and around the world are observing the Pongal festival this week, a celebration of the period of plenty, peace and happiness that follows the annual harvest.

THE Japanese embassy in Yangon is inviting applicants to take part in its third Japanese-to-Myanmar translation contest, which will be held on March 1 in Yangon and Mandalay with the aim of improving the translation abilities of students studying the Japanese language.
 
THE life and work of U Hla Tun, the late founder of the U Hla Tun Hospice (Cancer) Foundation, will be commemorated with a new building currently under construction at the hospice compound in Yangon’s Dagon Myothit (East) township, said U Pyone, an administrative director from the foundation.
 
The event will be held at the Myanmar Fisheries Federation headquarters on Bayintnaung Road in Yangon’s Insein township. The MLF’s head office is located in the same building and this year’s show will be held in conjunction with their annual general meeting.
 
YANGON – Air Bagan, in cooperation with Seoul-based Yuma Air Agency, has launched a temporary charter service between Yangon and Incheon, South Korea.
