Customs marches on

By Tin Moe Aung

CUSTOMS continued its unbeaten run with a 2-0 win but struggled to break down a resolute Ministry of Forestry defense for much of the match.

Goals from Soe Myat Min and Lwin Oo secured the victory for the defending champions but Customs fans were not impressed by the way their boys went about securing the three points at Aung San Stadium.

Forest played tight at the back and it wasn’t until the last minute of the first half that Customs broke the deadlock.

Winger Paing Soe beat the offside trap from the left, putting skipper Soe Myat Min clean through and one-on-one with the Forestry keeper.

The national team captain made no mistake, converting the chance and putting his side ahead.

The second half continued in much the same vein, with Forestry creating little up front but giving few scoring chances.

Customs midfielder Lwin Oo killed the game off in the 71st minute, scoring from close range after being set up by Soe Myat Min.

The difference in quality between the teams was obvious, with Customs boasting many past and present national team players, including four from the SEA Games squad.

Forestry, in comparison, fielded an inexperienced side and the result made some Customs fans question whether their side could retain the title.

“I’m not satisfied with Customs’ play in the game. Although Forestry wasn’t strong enough to compete against them, (Customs) could score only two goals. They should have scored more than that,” said spectator U Ko Ko Myat after the match.

But Customs coach U Shwe Baw was more enthusiastic and said the team was concentrating on keeping their winning rhythm going.

“Our target is to retain the title. If we could do it with an unbeaten run, it would be great,” he said

The win keeps Customs at the top of the Myanmar League table after three matches, while Forestry remain back in seventh, on three points.
