By May Oo Moe
THAN KYAW HTAY

How do you define art?

Something that I can do freely with my feelings.

How many competitions have you participated in?

The first was in 2000 and the second was the MCAA in 2004. I was one of the finalists.

Since when have you been interested in the arts?

When I was in eighth grade at school.

When did you first showcase your work?

My first exhibition was in 2006 and since then I have showcased in five group shows.

How many solo shows have you held?

Two.

WIN PE MYINT

What do you think about this competition?

As I concentrate on contem-porary style, this is a good one for me to be involved in.

What are your influences in art?

All that surrounds me, that is the essence of contemporary.

What is contemporary art to you?

It’s modern art.

What are you preparing for this competition?

Some of my recent work.

I see that you rarely sign up for the competitions. Why is that?

Most of the local competitions do not draw enough attention.

What will you do if you are the winner?

I want to show to the world that Myanmar artists are extremely talented.

How do you define art?

For me, it is painting along with the emotion I feel for it.

How many competitions have you participated in?

Only once abroad. That was in 1992 in the Niagara Falls water color competition, held in the US where I showed two paintings.

Since when have you been interested in the arts?

Since my childhood days.

When did you first showcase your work?

In1973. Since then I have had so many exhibitions that I cannot count the number.

How many solo shows have you held?

In totall seven. For 2008, I plan to have one in Hong Kong around November.

What do you think of the Myanmar Contemporary Art Awards?

It’s a good because most of the competitions have age limitations but this one is different. There should be more people in this competition.

What are your artistic influences?

I like the combination of realism and color fields which are totally different.
What is contemporary art for you?

Its 21st century art especially made by young artists…but I like it.

What are you preparing for this competition?

Like I said, mine will be the combination of both realism and color fields.

I see that you rarely sign up for competitions. Why is that?

I draw for myself and I do not expect everyone to feel the same with me. Some might like it and vice versa. It’s all good.

What will you do if you are the winner?

I have no idea.
