MYANMAR’S government announced through state media on February 9 that it will hold a referendum for a new constitution in May, clearing the way for multi-party elections in 2010.

 

Speaking at a press conference in Bangkok one day after taking office, the new Thai foreign minister, Mr Noppadon Pattama, said Thailand’s policy towards Myanmar will be based on the principle of noninterference, said a statement released by the Thai foreign ministry on February 7.

 
“We pray that the best things will come to us during the Year of the Rat,” said U Khin Phoe, 61, a member of the temple’s board of trustees. “For that reason, we only talk about auspicious and good things during the period of the Lunar New Year.”
The donation ceremony, held at the hospital on January 30, was attended by Mr Hisanori Yoshimura, the second secretary of the Japanese embassy in Myanmar, as well as officials from NPO Minzoku Forum and the hospital.

MORE than 430 people gathered at Yangon General Hospital on January 27 to donate blood to the National Blood Centre on the basis of their reverence for Dhammadûta Venerable Chekinda, who organised the ceremony.
 
Three Myanmar fishermen who were adrift on a bamboo raft in the Bay of Bengal for more than three months were rescued last week by fishermen off India’s eastern coast, a news report said on February 6.

Initially I became interested in art because my elder brother was practising. From him I was able to learn a lot about art and the skills of painting. Once I had established my interest I set about developing my own ability and enrolled in art school. I entered the University of Culture in 1998. By that stage I was painting a lot.
 
Normally, Myanmar women wear traditional tops such as yinsae ingyi (Myanmar jacket buttoned down the front), yinphone ingyi (jacket with an overlapping flap in front) and yinkhwe ingyi (open-fronted jacket), with a chaik longyi (a traditional garment worn by Myanmar men and women) at ceremonies.
