THE Department of Meteorology and Hydrology held a seminar on
earthquake monitoring at its office in Yangon on February 26.
The seminar, jointly organised by the department and Japan International
Cooperation Agency, was attended by experts from those two organisations
and from the Myanmar Earthquake Committee and Myanmar Engineering
Society.
Among the topics discussed were earthquake observation, international
cooperation in earthquake disaster mitigation, earthquake disaster
mitigation activities, disaster response strategies for tsunamis
and earthquakes, the potential for tsunamis to strike Myanmar’s
coast and public education about disaster preparation.
Organisers said Myanmar is a seismically active country so it
was important to establish more disaster mitigation programs in
cooperation with the government, local and international organisations,
and communities to prevent major destruction and fatalities.
