PEACE and quiet are two things this four-bedroom, two-storey house in Insein township has in abundance. Happily though it’s also near the Ywarma train station – meaning the inhabitants can get into Yangon City cheaply and conveniently.

The 2500-square-foot compound sits just off Insein and Baho roads and like nearly all houses in Yangon, has no garden or garage – just a concrete yard. This, however, makes for a good carpark, and at 20 feet in width, there’s plenty of space.

The first room inside the house is the living room, which has a teak floor and yellow paint which is a pleasant shade but has sections where dirty hands have clearly been in regular contact with the surface. Still, it’s nothing a fresh coat of paint wouldn’t fix.

A dining room and kitchen are also downstairs and both a functional but a little cramped. And to the left of the kitchen is a well-placed bathroom and toilet.
At the front left corner of the house, alongside the lounge room, is a single bedroom, which would be a great children’s bedroom.

A darkly-lit staircase leads onto a second floor landing which almost certainly needs curtains because the afternoon sun is strong and shines directly into the room. Two doors lead out from the landing onto the front balcony and provide views over both the front and side yards.

Upstairs there’s also a shrine room, a master bedroom, single bedroom, common bathroom and a family room.

An additional benefit for the lucky occupants of the master bedroom is the powerful airconditioner that feeds chilled air into the room.

One tube-well water system and a lighting meter are already set up at the eight-year-old house.
