THIS detached two-storey house in Thanlyin township is almost a holiday home within the city because it offers a serene riverside location with accompanying views and is quite apart from the city life.
But like all good holiday homes this house needs some love – the roof leaks, some of the floor needs replacing and it could probably do with another coat of paint.

Situated in a 10,000-square-foot compound within the Htut Khaung housing development near the Thanlyin Bridge, the five-bedroom house also has a sumptuous and colourful garden.

But through this greenery cuts a concrete driveway that follows the left edge of the block and flows under and past portico above the front door. There is also small storehouse at the back of the property that could be converted to a garage with a little work.

A folding metal grate and wooden door open into a well-ventilated downstairs living space. Alongside there is a bathroom and a single room that faces the front garden.

The dining room is unremarkable but spacious and the kitchen is basic but effective – easy to clean tiles, a basin and space for a gas stove.

Upstairs there are four bedrooms that are beset by a leaking roof, which probably isn’t hard to fix. All the bedrooms are bright and breezy and the two single bedrooms offer windows onto the Bago River. They also come with air conditioners.

The other two bedrooms, a double with ensuite and a single, face the equally lovely front garden.

All floors in the house are covered by easy-to-maintain but aesthetically unappealing grey tiles. Water is supplied to the house by tube well but an interested buyer would do well to consider an electricity generator because supply is sometimes interrupted.

Like any good holiday house this one needs some work, especially with the rainy season approaching.
