Commodity prices retreat after Thingyan

By Tin Moe Aung

PRICES of most of commodities have decreased in the last week following the end of the Thingyan Festival, according to dealers at Yangon’s Bayintnaung Complex.

High quality rice is now K24,500 per bag, down from K26,000, while standard quality is K16,000 per bag, down from K16,800 two weeks ago.

Gold fell to K563,000 per tical, down from K577,000 two weeks before.

Onion and garlic have also dropped in price from their Thingyan levels.

Cooking oil prices have fallen, with the exception of palm oil, which rose from K3200 per viss to K3400. Sesame oil was at K5000 per viss, down from K5200, while both wholesale and retail peanut oil prices fell slightly also.

Dealers at the centre said sales had been increasing after the Thingyan festival but prices had still dropped because the price of raw peanuts had decreased.

Chicken was one of the few commodities to rise in price; CP chicken increased from K6000 per viss to K6500, while the price of traditional chicken went up to K7200 from K6800.
