| FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS: Visitors admire the giant bell at Mingun, located in Sagaing Division 11 kilometres (7 miles) north of Mandalay on the western bank of the Ayeyarwady River. Mingun bell – the biggest, uncracked ringing bell in the world – is 200 years old this month. Casting started in 1808 and finished two years later under the direction of King Bodawphaya (1745-1819), who wanted a bell grand enough to hang in the huge Mingun Pahtodawgyi under construction at the time. The bell weighs 90 tonnes, or 55,555 viss, which can be represented by the mnemonic min hpyu hman hman pyaw, with the consonants signifying the number five in Myanmar astrology and numerology. – Khin Su Wai |
