Coffee, snacks and celebrity dolls

By May Oo Moe Translated by Aung Soe

PEOPLE, it seems, are always keen to look into the lives of celebrities. Call it a cult, but in today’s world it is safe to say that for the masses, celebrities are the talk on people’s lips. Now why we can’t take you inside Britney Spears home – the paparazzi have been trying for years – we have been able to get inside Yangon identity Moe Hay Ko’s affluent abode to see how a celebrity in Myanmar lives.

“Here we are,” the sweet tinkling voice of Mo Hay Ko rings out as our car comes to a halt in front of her compound. Inviting us through the gates, the popular Moe Hay Ko wearing a scarlet red blouse and jeans, leads us to the front door.

“You can only leave after a cup of coffee and some snacks,” her mother dictates. Mums even dominate in the lives of celebrities! Leading us into a totally white washed lounge, the room is decorated with beautiful candlesticks and an over-sized LCD screen that takes centre stage. The amber curtains and a plush carpet match to the owners taste. However the kitchen curtains in the next room, blazing in all their yellow glory, were mistakenly bought by her mother. “I prefer an amber curtain but mummy got the wrong one”, Moe said pouting her lips.

Ascending the stairs to the upper floor one passes two toilets and a wall decorated with a huge folding hand. Gesturing the way, the narrow corridor leads to a small prayer room for her and her family.

On the second floor are three bedrooms and a toilet. Moe Hay Ko’s bedroom, which I know many of you would like to check out, is painted a wonderful white colour with reddish brown curtains. A TV set blurts out yet another soap opera but it proves no disturbance to my fixation on her room full of…dolls.

Large figurines and dolls litter Moe’s beautifully big bed, taking up nearly all the space available. One can only guess why she has so many dolls, perhaps a “cutesy fetish” picked up through Japanese magazines, perhaps a celebrity who still likes to hold onto her childhood. One can’t be sure but it is fun to have a guess. Cherishing the brown and white puppy figurine above all else, Moe Hay Ko is not short of friends here at home.

Battling the dolls for attention, Moe Hay Ko’s extensive collection of handbags and fashion items reveal a more contemporary celebrity side. Beautiful portraits of the young star adorn the walls like all good celebrities should have.

Over coffee and snacks, her mother admits that most of the house was designed to suit the tastes of her celebrity daughter. And while the summer heat may prove too much to cuddle all her dolls at once, I am sure the celebrity fans out there appreciate how lucky she is.
