TREES benefit everyone, so growing plants helps creates a better world. Therefore picking suitable plants for your garden is important.
A lot of it depends on how much warmth and light your garden receives from the sun, says Dr Tin Maung Cho, Ph.D (Zool), of Moe Myint Kye Zin Hiway Star Landscaping Group.
“Chlorophyll plants, flowering, seasonal and colour pigment plants grow best in direct sunlight, so they should be sown in a sun-drenched garden,” he said.
For a shaded yard, pick fewer chlorophyll plants and select climbers, which grow better when protected from the direct heat of the sun. These plants, unlike others, are stunted by direct exposure.
“Nowadays, prickly plants like kiss-me-quick and high-priced fox tail tree are attracting a lot of attention from gardeners. These plants don’t require much care, and can be put wherever the sun shines,” he said.
A vegetable garden is a perennial favourite among gardeners, who can grow lemons, limes and pomelos without great expense.
“Sow the seeds in the yard, and watch as they gradually grow, it can bring great joy,” he adds.
“In my opinion, a person’s state of mind hinges on their immediate environment. A garden left to itself might become overgrown, which some home owners might not like”, said U Ko Ko Lay (Director) of Three Friends Construction, Design, Decoration and Engineering.
Wild grassland transformed into a well-kept garden with a wide variety of plant life can impress visitors and create a peaceful environment.
“If the garden is covered with dry grass, it has not been maintained for some time. This can detract from the appearance of the house, and the mood of the homeowner,” U Ko Ko Lay said.
U Ko Ko Lay studies a garden to assess its strong and weak points before setting to work.
“If the sun peeps over the top of the building, the landscaping designer will grow tall trees such as palm and other shade-givers to protect the garden from direct sunlight”, he said.
The scent of wild flowers from all seasons will draw butterflies and bees into a garden in search of pollen, while birds sport and sing in the shady trees.
“It’s easy for homeowners to grow plants that don’t need much attention. But some plants require care and regular maintenance,” he said.
“To have a beautiful garden with a tended lawn doesn’t require good soil; we can prepare the soil ourselves that is suitable for grass before we put the lawn down,” he said.
So let the morning sun flood into your gar-den, but don’t let your gar-den look parched. The warmth and light should be harnessed for the growing of green plants.
