SOUTH Korea donated US$100,000 to Myanmar last Wednesday to help victims of cyclone Nargis.
The donations was handed over by South Korea’s ambassador to Myanmar, Mr Park Key Chong, to Deputy Minister of Finance and Revenue Colonel Hla Thein Swe, according to a statement released by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on May 21.
On the same day, a plane carrying 32 tonnes of relief supplies from Seoul landed at Yangon International Airport. The shipment consisted of $500,000 worth of food, medicines, insecticides and other relief items.
A shipment of 19 tonnes of relief supplies sent by South Korea had also arrived in Yangon on May 13. The supplies, valued at US$400,000, included dried milk, wheat flour, canned tuna, soap, towels, toothbrushes, tents, water purifiers, medicine and first aid kits.
The statement released last week said South Korea has pledged to donate $2.1 million in relief aid to storm victims. It said the rest of the aid would arrive in Yangon soon and KOICA would cooperate with authorities to distribute supplies to storm-hit regions.
