INTERNATIONAL efforts to provide emergency aid to survivors of cyclone Nargis accelerated last week after the government started allowing more foreign relief workers into the country.

“We in ASEAN can play little more than a facilitating role in fostering greater trust and cooperation between the international community – which has the capabilities – and the Myanmar government.”

“We appreciate the work that donors are doing to help Nargis survivors but if they use the Red Cross symbol, people will be confused,” said Dr Tha Hla Shwe, the president of MRCS.

TV gangster Aung Khaing is helping Nargis victims in the Ayeyarwady delta area, helped by his actor friends and the Maha Gandharama monks. Aung Khaing was one of a group of celebrity volunteers, including fellow screen gangsters Ko Ko Oo and ......

“We will be very pleased if our donation is useful in providing medical treatment in the areas struck by the cyclone,” Mr Takashi Takino, the chairman of the club, said at the donation ceremony.

OUTBREAKS of diarrhoea that have swept through Pyapon township in Ayeyarwady Division are being brought under control through a combination of prevention, treatment and education, said a government medical official.

“The sense of having reached a turning point and a certain sense of optimism was a genuine conclusion and opinion [from the audience at the conference], although many of the people also feel that there is still quite a bit of relief work that needs to continue,”

“We’ll make donations to our members’ families who have suffered cyclone damage according to their loss levels. We’ll give first priority to those who lost their homes and now have no shelter,”

“Stockpiles of high-quality rice are reduced because some producing areas in Ayeyarwady Division were damaged in the storm. But there is enough standard-quality rice available to help relieve consumer’s worries,”

TOTAL agriculture losses from Cyclone Nargis are estimated at about US$1 billion, the government announced at the ASEAN-UN International Pledging Conference on Humanitarian Assistance to Myanmar in Yangon on May 25.

“About 15 cars a day are being traded at the zone, up from a few cars a day last month, and it’s the highest sales rate this year,”

REHABILITATION work in cyclone-affected areas is beginning to gain momentum, not only in the rebuilding of homes but also in the distribution of assistance, the chairman of Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association (MCEA) said last week.

DEFENSE of the Ancients (DotA) is now the most popular game among Myanmar gamers – a group that is growing in numbers every year. In 2006 the local gaming scene had a watershed moment; the Myanmar Gamers Club organised the inaugural DotA e-sport championship to show off their passion (and, of course, decide who is the best gamer).

“The first few weeks were a little bit awkward as I wanted to play it at work whenever I got free time. Once, I almost had a heart attack when my boss caught me playing games,”
