“Our experience of work in other emergencies is that people find within themselves the resilience to work, but after a month or so fatigue starts showing even in the most committed and hardworking of people,”

“[U Kyaw Thu] sent off the teams with a message that the assessment should not be considered as a political issue; the teams should not add to the burden of the cyclone Nargis survivors,”

“The damage in Yangon was worst in the eastern and southern districts, where most of the lamp posts were down. In the eastern district the level of supply is now 96.22pc, the western district has 100pc, the southern 76.6pc and the northern district 94.85pc,”

“Part of the reason our thanaka is so good is that as soon as it is harvested we immediately wash it thoroughly and then leave it to dry. This brings out the good smell,”

“Any farmer can buy a tiller at the recommendation of the village head. We won’t charge any interest, and the farmers can pay in paddy or cash. If they pay in paddy we accept it at the market value at the time,”
“The only problem is that right now we can’t be too specific about the size of fish arriving in the market. Some of the levees between different ponds were breached by the storm so fish of different sizes from different ponds have mixed,”

“Many Turkish NGOs working in the area of humanitarian assistance have also contacted our embassy in Bangkok asking how to assist Myanmar victims. I’m sure much assistance from these organisations will come soon,”

A health worker from the Pazundaung township said local health authorities and NGOs had been conducting dengue fever prevention programs since the last week of May, such as spraying insecticide in schools and putting guppy fish in water tanks to eat larvae.

Department spokesman U Aung Tun Khine said the department would consider applications for adoption when the situation has settled down, provided the applicant can show a letter of recommendation from the local authorities or the monk who was caring for the child.

“We need to uplift the spirits of our depressed workers to help them get back to working again. At the moment many of them are extremely reluctant to go anywhere near the water – it’s a major psychological barrier we need to overcome,”

“We will have to wait and see what will happen in their major harvest because India is Myanmar’s largest export market for beans and pulses and our exports mainly rely on this harvest,”

From January to October 2007, China imported wooden furniture worth US$906 million from ASEAN countries, up more than 15 percent over the same period last year. Of this, the value of imported rosewood furniture reached US$160 million, an increase of nearly 25pc over the previous year.

Many villagers have already returned home to their heavily damaged towns from temporary refugee camps. U Ko Ko Htway, secretary of the Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association’s (MCEA) rehabilitation committee, said it was critical to provide proper shelter to affected villagers from the ravages of the monsoon.

“When you enter an office, the first thing you see is the reception. It is important for the company to make a good first impression on customers and a lot of that depends on the receptionists,”

“He is very talented,” Dr Van Khar continues, relating how his son became interested in art. “One day, he visited to an artist’s workshop close to our home and fixed his eyes on the works of art — since then, he has spent most of his time at the canvas.”

“Although the competitors I was up against were the same, this year the course itself had a lot more obstacles on it,” he said, adding that he practiced for nearly two months leading up to the event.
