“Out of 985 villages, two-thirds were affectedly badly,” said Mr Bhuiya. “We went immediately to those villages. We had our experience of microcredit and we knew those villages. That was one of our main strengths.”

“There are a few more cases of diarrhoea than usual but it’s certainly not what we expected. We’re happy that things have been managed very well and are under control,”

“It works in Myanmar for the same reason that it works elsewhere,” said Erica Lynn Tubbs, the deputy country representative of Pact Myanmar. “If you look at developed nations you see that credit and being able to borrow money is a central aspect of the economy.”

“Living at the community centre was a great experience that allowed us to deal with the local people very closely,” he said. “We were also thankful to the local authorities for helping us carry out our work.”

“These inland small-scale fishermen live near their business. Their daily life is always the same: catch the fish and sell the fish in any place. With this project we will improve their financial, social and education situations,”

“We could easily give cash to the fishermen and let them build their own boats but that can have a negative effect if the fishermen misuse the money, and it would cost more as well,”
