BRILLIANT white walls and teak window frames adorn many houses in Yangon’s more-affluent suburbs and this Mayangone township house follows suit, with the obligatory ego-enhancing pillars and concrete compound also present.
Naturally there are the 8-foot-high brick fence and razor-wire garnishes that any well-to-do house owner simply must have.
Step inside the house into the living room and the feeling of deja vu gleaned from the exterior continues with the wood parquet flooring. But the lovely leather couches are a nice touch and might perhaps succeed in drawing attention away from the unnecessary pillar alongside the staircase.
The dining room has grey slate flooring and is furnished with an attractive eight-seat table that only the wash basin in the corner is able to detract from.
Next door is a bathroom and shower that includes – inexplicably – two separate toilet cubicles.
The kitchen is utilitarian and comes with steel basin, glass-front wall cupboards and slate working areas with plenty of under-bench storage space.
At the front corner of the house there’s also a reading room or study.
A pleasant wooden staircase leads upstairs where some hint of individuality seeps out from the wood partitioned double bedroom to the left of the landing.
Alongside is the master bedroom and ensuite bathroom, which has a comfortable looking bathtub and combined shower. The master bedroom also has an air-conditioner and a doorway into the upstairs study, which overlooks the ugly grey compound.
There’s a shrine room at the front of the house and a large balcony from where you’ll be able to survey the house’s impressive outer defences.
The compound measures 2925 square feet and included with the sale are a phone line, two electricity meters and mains water supply.
