“I have lived in Kyun Tharyar for 10 years. We get flooded every year but it became serious about five years ago,” she said last week. “I moved to the monastery with five members of my family five days ago and there are many other families taking shelter here.”

“We integrated psychosocial care into some of our community-based first aid program in 2004 and so now we are working on refresher courses,” said Dr Aung Kyaw Htut, the head of training for MRCS.

The relief goods included sets of robes, roofing materials for 134 monasteries and more than 260 households and schools in Kungyangon and Thonegwa villages, and a full basket of food items for 750 households including clothes and K5000 cash for each household.

“Before the cyclone, there were six nuns in our dwelling. Since it collapsed, only two elder nuns can stay there, and the rest are scattered to other places as the shelter is not secure against the weather,”
THE first INGO-funded project aimed at revitalising the cyclone-devastated fishery sector will start in the coming weeks at Hainggyi Kyun in Ayeyarwady Division at a cost of about US$200,000, said an official from the Myanmar Fisheries Federation (MFF).

“I’m honoured to be recognised by Condé Nast Traveler magazine for being one of the world’s top travel specialists,” said U William Myatwunna. “For me, it’s a lot more than an individual achievement. I think it is a … great advertisement for our tourism industry.”

Both of these are oversights; less than 140 kilometres to the northwest lies Monywa, the capital of Sagaing Division. Monywa is a booming industrial town that flanks the Chindwin River and is a centre of trade with both India and the upper Chindwin region.

MYANMA Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) will provide wireless internet in some universities, located in Yangon, Mandalay and other cities, in October, according to the spokesperson of its information and technology department.

JAPANESE foreign labour recruitment agencies began seeking Myanmar workers under an official work permit system for the first time in June, agents for a number of local companies said last month.

A NEW cold storage facility for vaccinations, established with donations from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation (WHO), was unveiled last week at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Yangon.

“After Nargis, only 25pc of the mills destroyed could get back on their feet through their own efforts. Another 50pc are now running again with assistance from friends and relatives. But the remaining 25pc can’t produce collateral for a bank loan and or get friends or relatives to guarantee it. So their mills are still out of action,”

“We have to pay about K2000 a viss [1.6 kilograms or 3.6 pounds] when buying the eels from the fishermen or catchers. And with the higher transport charges and expenses to use the tender market, it’s making it pretty hard for us to turn a profit when the tender prices at Muse are low,”

STATE-OWNDED Thai oil company PTTEP is expected to sign a deal with Myanmar to import natural gas in coming months, the company announced late last month.

“At first we heard that these low-cost homes would be given only to people who had lost their homes in the cyclone and would be paid for by instalments. We didn’t own our house or land because we were sharing with another family in Aung Thapyay village.....

“The difference with impressionism is that it leaves the viewer free to define a painting’s meaning. The viewer can feel any aspect [of the painting] and they have a chance to complete the picture with their thoughts,”

I don’t like women who are selfish. Some women are not serious about marriage and they don’t have future plans for it. So how is this kind of woman to raise her own children? I like women who are willing to sacrifice their selfishness for their husband and family if needed.

“That was non-stop fighting and completely worth the K7000 I paid for the ticket. Both fighters were good and we all thought Yan Gyi Aung would come out on top. He was crying after he went down. “If they meet again it won’t be easy at all for Lone Chaw.”
