South Dagon water project nears end

By Aung Kyi

THE Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is expected to complete the first phase of its South Dagon township water supply project by the end of next month, said U Sein Win, the deputy chief engineer of the committee’s Water and Sanitation Department.

He said the aim of the project’s first phase is to supply 1 million gallons of water a day to households in 10 wards of South Dagon township, while in the second of two phases, the supply will be increased to 1.7 million gallons a day to the 10 wards in the project area.

“Starting from the first week of this month we have been supplying water to the 71st and 107th wards. By the end of September we will also be supplying water to the 53rd, 54th, 55th, 56th, 70th, 104th, 105th and 106th wards,” said U Sein Win.

The first phase of the project, which started in February, also involved the construction of two concrete water tanks, a water treatment plant and eight tube wells of 10 inches in diameter in the township’s 107th ward, said U Win Aung, an assistant chief engineer from the Water and Sanitation Department.

“Each water tank is capable of holding 100,000 gallons of treated water. Six 30-horsepower water pumps have also been installed in the water supply station and now we are building the pipelines to the remaining wards of the project area,” he said.

“For the second phase of the project we also started building another water treatment facility in the 54th ward in the first week of this month,” U Win Aung said.

The second phase of the project is expected to be completed early next year.
U Min Soe Thiha, a pump engineer from KOL Global Company, which imported the water pumps for YCDC from China, said the company is making preparations to run the pumps 24 hours a day and will provide service while they are operating.

“We imported the pumps from Shanghai Kaiquan Pump (Group) Company Limited, which also produces pumps for nuclear reactors in China,” he said.

Meanwhile, other residences in South and North Dagon townships, as well as Dagon Industrial Zone, continue to be supplied with water through the main pipelines from Nga Moe Yeik reservoir.

YCDC supplies 130 million gallons of water to the city each day from Nga Moe Yeik, Fugyi, Hlawga, Gyophyu, and Naungnapin reservoirs, said U Win Aung.

“We have also been supplying 10 million gallons of water from 289 tube wells to residents in areas of the city that are far from the main water supply pipelines,” he said.
