DOF compiles Nargis recovery book

Sann Oo

THE Department of Fisheries is compiling data for a book intended to serve as a historical record of efforts to rehabilitate the fisheries sector in the aftermath of cyclone Nargis, a department official said last week.

“We want to keep a historical record of our rehabilitation work in the fishery sector,” the official said. “This book will be a record of the step-by-step work conducted by the department, such as building and distributing boats to fishermen.”

He said the book will be about 150 pages long and will be illustrated with photographs of the rehabilitation work.

“The book will also include the work done by the Myanmar Fisheries Federation and its affiliated associations. Everything we do for the fishery sector will be included, so we have a valuable record of the history,” he said.

He added that a publication date for the book had not yet been determined.
Under a government-sponsored plan, the Department of Fisheries built nearly 10,000 boats following the cyclone and distributed them – along with nets and other equipment – to fishermen in storm-hit areas.
