SIX countries have come together, under the chairmanship of Myanmar, to discuss the future of tourism in the Mekong sub-region. The occasion was the 22nd meeting of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Tourism Working Group, which met in Nay Pyi Taw from October 16 to 18.
“Nargis has certainly brought us opportunities,” said Waldemar Pickardt, the head of Water and Sanitation for UNICEF. “It has opened up new possibilities in giving people clean and safe water.”
 
AN increase in the incidence of diabetes among children in Myanmar has prompted the Ministry of Health to promote awareness of the disease in the lead-up to World Diabetes Control Day, on November 14.
 
The number of hungry people had increased by another 75m by the end of 2007 due to soaring food and energy prices during the past three years. The crisis is due to decreasing investments in agriculture in the poorest countries during the past 30 years.
 
WELL-WISHERS and students made donations in cash and kind to the value of K8.8 million at a ceremony at the main Mogok Vipassana Meditation Centre in Bahan township on October 18. The event was in honour of the Venerable Mogok Sayadaw, renowned for his methods of teaching insight meditation.
 
“Moe Hnyin was known as the monastery for rich people,” he said. “These people were traders, doctors, engineers – successful people – and they brought their wives and daughters, it was a society … just like an upper-class refugee camp.”

The library moved from its former premises in Tarmwe township to its current home at 85, Thirimingalar Avenue on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road between April and August this year. The library remained open during the move to allow access to its materials.

Following a successful music concert in London called Temptation 2, which took place on August 25 to raise money for survivors of Cyclone Nargis, organisers are now planning how to spend the money here in Myanmar.

 

I didn’t expect to win because everyone was so beautiful and their designs were outlandish as well. But I didn’t feel down about that because even if I wouldn’t be Miss People I was contributing to the event by being one of the models. I tried to think of it like a show rather than a contest.
