“This year on average has not been particularly good but since the middle of October our sales have dropped by 20 to 30 percent. I think that the reduced demand during October might be due to the number of festivals that take place at this time of year,”

EMPLOYERS of Myanmar workers abroad are tightening their belts as the global financial crisis reduces demand for their companies products and services, a number of agents from Malaysia and Singapore said last week.

A MYANMAR company is set to increase the manufacture of locally-produced vehicles and motorcycles during the coming year. The expanded production is an income-boosting move by First Myanmar Investment (FMI), its president, U Theim Wai, told the company’s annual meeting last week.

“Now we are making a profit because raw materials prices are 45 percent lower than in August. The selling price has also dropped by 18pc from last year”.
“The importers and the exporters are facing many difficulties because of the ever changing prices. To help them carry out their transactions, the authorities decided on November 3 to change the committee’s meetings from fortnightly to weekly,”

MYANMAR’S fisheries exports have not so far been affected by the world financial crisis, government experts say. But the government is also seeking to improve the country’s representation at international trade fairs to boost exports in the future.

“We’re distributing pamphlets with the guidelines to residents through the local authorities this month. We think it would be useful for the cyclone victims if they learn how to build strong houses by using the guidelines themselves.”

MYANMAR Engineering Society (MES) has completed construction of the first government primary school, at Kungyangon township, Yangon Division, using the so-called interlocking system of construction, said society president U Than Myint, at Nyaung Ngu village last Sunday.

HOUSE OF THE WEEK
Altogether there are three bedrooms, including on ensuite master that leads out onto a veranda at the right-hand side of the house. Like the living room it comes generously furnished with a double bed, several chairs and a big wardrobe.

“As far as ASEAN is concerned, our role here is humanitarian. We have made an impact and we must continue to be effective within that space and use that later on to push beyond,”

“BIMSTEC is an opportunity we should seize together. … There is much greater connectivity between us: more trade and investment, and more people-to-people exchanges,”

THE Philippines and Indonesia submitted the approved ASEAN charter to the grouping’s secretary general, Mr Surin Pitsuwan, last week, leaving Thailand as the only ASEAN member country still to approve the document.

“Cyclone Nargis had a very strong effect on the fisheries business,” said U Than Oo, a fisherman from Bogale township. “Many fishermen died during the cyclone, and those who survived had to restart their business.”

SHWEDAGON Pagoda hosted its 24th annual dusk-to-dawn robe weaving contest on the eve of the full moon day of the lunar month of Tazaungdine, which this year fell on November 12.

“We have already fixed much of the storm damage but there are still many parts of the museum in need of repair. The donation from the Thai-Myanmar Association and well-wishers from Thailand is of great help to us,”

“We only see the singers on VCD and TV. At times, there are some small karaoke concerts by local people in Pagoda festivals or other traditional events but it’s rare to see a famous singer off the TV. So whenever there is a concert almost all the people from Pathein go and enjoy it,”

“At the event, it was like being a minder to a rock star,” Ms Pattison says, laughing. “Everyone was coming up wanting to congratulate her, shake her hand, tell her how much they love the painting. It was fantastic.”

Yeah, I mean it’s more difficult to get to the higher level. But I found that the basic works are easy when you can control your hand move- ments well. The movements of the hand holding the chisel are very important in this kind of job.
