THE shape of this house’s compound, which measures 5614 square feet, is not the only this about it that seems a little irregular.

The four-bedroom house gives a quality impersonation of a layer cake with its square design and colour scheme that incorporates frosty whites with sugary pinks and spongy yellows. It’s a scheme that would work well, were it not for the ugly black horizontal security bars.

As with nearly every large house in Yangon there’s an iron gate and a concrete driveway.

A slight variation – not quite an irregularity – are the several strips of lush green lawn, a row of plants along the front of the house, a number of palm trees and a small water feature.

There’s also a portico at the side of the house with understated pillars and a garage at the rear of the property.

It’s the interior of the house that furthers the slightly irregular theme. Sure, there are the usual complicated lighting arrangements and parquet floors, but there is some solid looking and simple wooden furniture in the lounge room.

The kitchen is spacious and well lit, with some slate tiling on the floor, loads of work and storage space and white tiling.

French windows allow in plenty of light for the dining room and open up the possibility of open-air eating. Also downstairs is a bathroom, maid’s room and an ensuite bedroom, which even comes with a bathtub.

Upstairs there’s a large but cosy family room with a built-in wooden cupboard and television stand.

Less irregular is the shrine room and the front balcony, which is so small as to render it redundant.

There are three ensuite bedrooms upstairs – two of which come with baths – and all three have their own balconies.

Both tube well and mains water supply the house, while there’s one electricity meter and the house comes on a perfectly regular 60-year lease.
