Word on the street .... with Blueberry

By Yadana Htun

THIS week, Time out had a long chat with the members of Blueberry when we accidentally met at a shopping centre. Blueberry is a three piece pop band who arrived on the music scene in 2004 although in 2006 one member of the band left leaving just Ah Pan and Ah Pu. Most girl-bands arrive on the music scene and disappear soon after, but not so Blueberry. Time out asked the secret of keeping their four year old band.

Timeout: What will you get up to in December?
Ah Pu: We will perform at Myitkyina on Decmeber 17 and 18. At New Year, we will be in Mandalay.

Which of you is oldest?
Ah Pan is a year younger than I am.

Why did your band mate leave? Were there clashes between you?
No, we were of the same mind. But she prefers a career in business to music.

Would you accept another member in the group?
We don’t plan to increase our group size because it isn’t easy to find agreement with each other. Even us, we try to get on well with each other though because we are sisters.

What’s the secret to keeping the band going for such a long time?
The important thing is that all the band mates must love the music and understand each other. Every one has their own opinion but sometimes you need to respect the others’. And you should always discuss everything about music with each other.

How about fashion? Do you have similar taste?
We both like styles that are quite androgynous.

Every concert, your per-formances are always new and get attention. What are your preparations for your dance?
Before the concert, we always think how to perform with new. We want our audience to feel different at each time. It’s boring to be the same every time.

Are your dances original?
Yeah, a friend of ours is a dancer and taught us a lot. We also learnt some moves from K Mi Ko. And we always think of new steps.

How important is per-formance?
It’s very important and always a good attraction. We’ve noticed that people are more careful about performance these days. You can see this in MTVs.

You have different heights and shape. So, is it a problem when you dance together?
Yeah, sometimes it is. But mostly we have the same ideas. Even if we disagree with each other, our mum and sister help us.

Think you two were twins….?
We would fight more each other. But now, I always forgive her because I’m the eldest.

What feedbacks do you usually get from your fans?
Normally, people don’t know who we are if we go out by ourselves. But if we go out together, they know that we are Blueberry. And people often confuse us think we are twins. They say our lyrics are a bit childish and suited to teenagers. But this is our music style and we love it. But we are trying to change our music styles because, currently, we are a bit inspired by R&B.

So, will we see your R&B songs in future?
Yeah, we’re trying to put them in our album but we’re not sure when. We are still recording the songs and we’ll be providing some for group albums but they won’t be released for awhile.

Have you ever thought to sing solo?
Never, we love singing together because we feel more confident and focus on our vocal parts. So, we will be under the name Blueberry forever. But if we are requested to feature, we will help.
