“On behalf of the artists, I’m pleased to see such an impressive ceremony being held. But it also gives the audience the opportunity to meet with their favourite stars and they get the chance to not only see the artists’ performance in the films but, because of this event, they can feel and see them in their real lives too,” U Nyan Win said. “If the audiences are happy, we are happy too.”

It’s hard to imagine Bayinnaung turning a blind eye to his subjects pilfering from royal waters but, as opposed to, say, Mandalay and Bagan, long-gone royal dynasties have little impact on modern life here.

“When the law on political parties is prescribed, political doors will be open according to law to the minority who oppose the government. If they want to work with the government in unity, they are to come to the doors that are kept open. We want Mr Gambari to urge them to do so,”

“Attending international travel shows is the most effective way to promote the Myanmar tourism industry. Our committee never misses important international travel shows like ITB,”

“We choose the islands based on the condition that there must be a midwife under the Health Department who can provide healthcare for four nearby villages, and it must be easy to travel between these villages,”

“People from Yangon come to Putao by air. We will then arrange the rest of the tour for them, especially to Mount Phonekanrazi. We also plan to build a road from Putao to the foot of the mountain,”

“According to our experiences in previous years, we found that some people were unable to come to Ngapali during Thingyan due to an insufficient number of flights,”

Mr Ansari’s itinerary in Yangon includes inaugurating the English teaching centre, that was funded by the Indian government under a cooperation program between New Delhi and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which Myanmar is a member.

The effects of Nargis remain a concern, with a 32 percent decline in rice production in seven townships in Ayeyarwady Division last year attributed to poor quality seeds, salinity, iron toxicity, and a shortage of labour and draught animals. The report also details how damage to the livestock and fishing sectors will affect food insecurity in 2009.

“They have to know more about market conditions and soil treatment and other factors concerning agriculture. More information about growing seasonal crops would help them choose the right seeds,”

“We understand the problems of construction wholesalers. But we are also having a tough time running our business, and most construction will stop,”

“Fifty three of these schools are being built with funds from donors and the Ministry of Education. We have targeted to build another 71 schools by the start of the next school year on June 1,”

“Since the first half of December, the interior decorations market has been stagnant. Most of the projects we’re involved with are related to business, such as shops and the finishing the exteriors of new apartments. In the past month there have been very few home owners looking to decorate the interior of their houses or apartments,”

There is a built-in, one-car garage downstairs, right alongside the living room, although the two are separated by a wall. The lounge room itself is long, parquet-floored and includes a moveable partition to split the room into a dining room as well, if required. A double bedroom sits behind the living room and comes with tiled floors and newly painted yellow walls.

“This year, I only made an outfit for my sister and I wanted to create a bright look. That’s why I came up with this design, which I think makes her to look like a golden statue. Actually, I made three outfits and we chose the best one, which met both of our tastes,”

The porridge is only served between 10pm and 3am and has been popular with young people leaving the nearby Pioneer nightclub. This is almost an homage to the restaurant’s roots; in Singapore, many dining venues stay open 24 hours to accommodate late-night customers.

THIS weeks Time out is excited to interview young musician who works behind the stage by creating great music for famous MC. G Tone is a member of Cyclone band but he is well known in hip hop circles for his creations. He is young but experienced.
