“They conferred on how the international community can support the secretary general’s good offices efforts to promote the engagement in a democratisation process by the people and government of Myanmar,”
 
“The close collaboration between the government and the international community over the last nine months has been vital to the relief and early recovery efforts,” the chairman of TCG, U Kyaw Thu, who also heads the Civil Service Selection and Training Board, was quoted as saying in a statement released by the group after the launch.
Thai statistics show that 1.4 million foreigners entered Thailand for medical treatment in 2007, and the number in 2008 is expected to rise to 1.69 million. Of the 2007 total, the citizens of ASEAN countries numbered 100,773 patients, of which Myanmar patients were the largest group, at 36pc, followed by Cambodia (24pc).

FIGURES from the Shwedagon Pagoda’s board of trustees show a significant drop in the number of foreign visitors to the landmark pagoda in 2008 compared with the previous year.

THAILAND is proposing to open four more cross-border channels to bolster overland trade with Myanmar. The intent is both to correct the trade deficit suffered by Thailand last year, and to position Thai interests to take advantage of a future opening up of the Myanmar market.
