Myanmar bans crocodile exports in line with CITES

YANGON – Myanmar has banned the export of crocodiles to foreign countries to protect them from extinction, the Ministry of Livestock Breeding and Fisheries said on February 16.

Myanmar’s crocodiles are included in the list of world’s animal species facing extinction, the export of such wildlife is subject to the permission of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild Fauna and Flora, Xinhua news agency cited a local daily as saying here.

Of a total of 23 species of crocodiles in the world, three species, including the Ngamoeyeik, Thai crocodiles, Ginga and another crocodile are found in Myanmar.

Ngamoeyeik crocodiles take sanctuary in Bogale and Labutta in Ayeyarwady Division and other three townships in Magwe and Tanintharyi divisions.
The commercial breeding of crocodiles in Myanmar started in 1978.
