“When we started the project we had a bit of trouble getting the mixture right and sometimes the pots would break. Now the quality is very good, it is a good business for us,”

“When the elephants are three years old they are trained for 15 days on how to be around humans. When they are old enough they are sent to work and then they are retired at the age of 60,”

“We will never forget that night; I lost my brother and more than 10 family members. Whenever I see rain clouds I can’t stand it, I just start crying. But we have to survive, and we can never give up. In my village, we didn’t lose as many people as some neighbouring villages did, but we did lose property,”
“The book would be published in English as a guide for physicians on the pharmaceuticals on the market,”
The UN on May 10 launched its Flash Appeal, calling for $187 million in relief funding, but many donors voiced concerns over the distribution of aid. In the meantime, locals mobilised, donating and distributing millions of dollars in food, clothing and medicine.

“My wife and two daughters all lost their lives during Nargis. I am left all alone, I don’t know whether to consider myself lucky or not. Even though I’m alive, I feel as though I’m dead. Although those who are dead do not feel anything, those that are left behind live on in an unreal world,”

“The ASEAN assessment report (PONJA) said little about the needs of vulnerable groups, including older people, yet this information is vital in informing an effective long-term response,”

We started our journey from Mandalay by boarding the Mandalay-Myitkyina train. We bought tickets for the sleeper car. The train left the Mandalay station at 12 noon. The ceiling fan in our cabin didn’t work, so the sole source of air conditioning was the natural air blowing through the open window while the train was moving.

“As a result, Kachin, Chin and Shan states, as well as Tanintharyi Division, will get 12 to 15 days of rain, the Ayeyarwady delta will get eight to 12 days, and the rest of the country will get five to seven days,”

“I believe that my government and the ASEAN countries share the consensus that cultural cooperation within our region can be the most effective instrument that will enhance mutual understanding and friendship between ASEAN and South Korea,”

“Buyers are ordering as much as they were before the financial crisis, but prices are still 30pc down compared to before the crisis. But if we can maintain exports at the current level, we can reach this $700 million target,”
“Ten schools of 1800 or 1200 square feet are worth K21.6 million each. We aim to have sufficient educational accommodation in the delta region. These schools are built in new locations, not those that were hit by the cyclone,”
“Demand for fish in the local market has noticeably increased. As long as the price of fish increases along with the price of feed, farmers will be able to cover their production costs,”

“After the first phase is completed, the airport will be able to cope with 3.5 million passengers, and after the third phase is completed, it will be able to cope with 10.5 million passengers annually,”

“I wear Myanmar traditional clothes in Singapore at memorable events such as Myanmar National Day. Wearing traditional clothes shows the standard and value of your culture I think. Nevertheless, hot weather can make wearing the gaung baung uncomfortable.”

“Stunt actors receive little compensation for injuries at work even if a responsible person is sympathetic towards him, if the person is not concerned for him he won’t even receive a little. The wages [of a stunt actor] are equivalent to the cost of an actor’s pair of shoes,”

“We have been struggling for some time to develop new athletes who are good enough to compete in international events and to achieve success, whether records or medals. We are hoping that our efforts now will pay off at the 2011 SEA Games,”

Myanmar got off to a bright start in their clash against Bangladesh and were awarded a penalty inside 60 seconds when defender Mamun Mia brought down Yazar Win Thein inside the box. However, goalkeeper Aminul Haq managed to block Myo Min Tun’s spot kick with his outstretched right hand.
