NORTH Okkalapa is unlikely to be high in anyone’s wish-list for favourite places to live but it’s relatively cheap and there is plenty of space.

This one-storey reinforced concrete house has both of these: It’s priced at K70 million and has a 4800-square-foot block.

The front yard has space for a lawn, a garden and maybe even a second fruit tree to go with the mango tree already there.

The downside is the house, which badly needs a new coat of paint both inside and out.

Beyond the obvious need for a coat of paint, the house wants for little and follows a simple design, which is perfect.

The living room has large windows on two sides, with bars for security and curtains to cut out the heat. It’s floored with uninspiring brown tiles but does have an air-conditioner.

Alongside is a dining room and reading room; both come with similarly simple flooring.

To the back of the house is the large, fuss-free kitchen that has plenty of tiles and a standard integrated bench and basin along one wall. It won’t win any design awards but it’s more than capable of handling a family’s day-to-day cooking and cleaning requirements.

Also at the back of the house is the double bedroom, which has windows looking onto the small yard at the side.

The remaining bedrooms – both singles – face the frontyard and have the same tired looking parquet flooring. The house has both mains and tube well water supplies; there is one electricity meter, one telephone line and three air-conditioners too.
