“The maximum annual rental of the 9x20 foot temporary boards is K38 million at Myaynigone junction in Sanchaung township. These locations are in great demand because they are in the business district and command good views,”

“Myanmar is not at all affected by the flu outbreak and so we have not made any changes to our products or cooking methods since then, we just make sure the meat is perfectly steamed as always,”
“Both side agreed price per tonne of fertiliser was US$285. But later on, the Israeli company told us that they could only sell at $310 per tonne. So, the agreement was not come into effect,”
“My perception is this is the right time to go into the stock market. This kind of chance comes maybe once in 30 years. ... We can’t predict the shape of the recovery, but [the global economy] will recover,”
“Demand for employees in Brunei comes once in a blue moon. And even then, they offer no more than one or two vacancies. They prefer experienced hands only. But some Myanmar workers who have been in Brunei call their relatives or friends if they know that a job vacancy has arisen,”

At the London gold fix, where gold is priced twice a day, the price of an ounce of gold rose from US$924.75 on May 19 to $959.75 on May 22 before falling back to $945 as of the afternoon of May 26.

“One of the [trade] advantages Myanmar has is that it is abundant with natural resources and manpower, while South Korea is a country with experience in technology and international trade,”

HOUSE OF THE WEEK
Of course there are some aspects that could be improved. The 3850-square-foot compound has been affected by compulsive concreting syndrome, a common affliction in Yangon. But at least the present owner has made some effort to bring the yard to life, installing a row of flower beds along the brick fence and a motley assortment of flower pots around the edge of the house.

“My purpose was to help them keep up with what is happening in the world, to allow them to see how the world is a global village and to boost their sense of self-confidence.”

“There are two border crossings between Laos and Myanmar: the village of Wanpon on the Mekong River, which is a 45-minute drive from Tachileik, and Mong Maw. But there are hardly any people in these areas,”

“Some hotels can operate their generators on a 24-hour basis providing lighting only. The power supply at most hotels is available between 6pm and 6am the next day. Some hotels provide additional time for electricity between 1pm and 3pm,”

“Korea and ASEAN will work together in the area of green growth in line with the advent of a green era. Green growth is not a matter of choice but a must to brace for global warming and climate change. Many advanced nations have already achieved much progress in this area. Korea also plans to step up efforts working together with ASEAN member countries,”

“These projects will also cover vitally important activities like creating employment and generating incomes for small farmers through crops and value-adding activities, including increased availability of rice seeds locally, improved community-based water management, and reviving a healthy and productive ecosystem for forest and fishery sectors,”

Super Junior is a 13 member boy band formed in 2005 who perform pop, dance, trot (the oldest form of South Korean pop music) and R&B. One of their hit songs ‘Happiness’ is covered by the local band Myaypaeyo (Peanut Butter) and also became a hit here.

But movie giants Pedro Almodovar, Ken Loach, Jane Campion and Ang Lee — heading the pack of 20 top world filmmakers running for the Palme — left without a mention from the jury headed by French actress Isabelle Huppert.
