THIS house in Thaketa township is in many ways the Yangon version of the suburban quarter-acre dream house.
It’s unlikely to appeal to western aesthetic ideals – there are superfluous balconies, high walls and the ubiquitous pillars but in Yangon this equals suburbia.
And a quarter acre in Yangon is precious space and it’s been used fairly well – there is a garden and a swimming pool as well.
Other advantages are the relative solitude of Thaketa township, which isn’t far removed from the city.
Surrounding the pool is a landscaped area with palms, pines and potted plants.
Elsewhere there is a space for children to play, while there is space to park a car under the tall portico.
The inside of the house is generally subdued, with the four bedrooms furnished with simple furniture, although all have ensuite bathrooms. There is, of course, plenty of parquet flooring and ornate lighting but that comes with the territory.
At the back of the house is a servant’s quarters and bathroom. The kitchen, meanwhile, is definitely a working room – there is a lot of space to store food and crockery but preparation space is limited.
Two electricity meters and one telephone line will be included in the sale price. The house uses government mains water. At K320 million, it’s hardly cheap but dream homes rarely are.
