Industry experts say the world will continue to consume at a rate faster than production growth, and supply is expected to lag behind demand. However, in the short term, overall world rice trade for 2009 is forecast to fall by 2pc to 29.2 million tonnes, largely due to a fall in demand from key Asian importers Philippines and Bangladesh.

The garment trade displaced fisheries products as Myanmar’s largest export to Japan in 2007. Due to Myanmar’s trade policy of “Export First, Import Later”, Myanmar still enjoys an annual trade surplus with Japan.

“Our profits are suffering to some extent because we can’t deal directly with the true buyers. Our exporters need to have the capacity to link directly with the end-buyers abroad,”

And while it’s only a short cup comp this year, when it becomes the Myanmar National League next year there are signs that it might bring with it something almost always associated with the English competition – big money.
HOUSE OF THE WEEK

“We’ve printed 1000 copies of the booklet, which is called Plantation Guide for the Mangroves of Myanmar and will produce another 200 per month. If donors want to contribute, we will deliver the books to villages on their behalf. The cost of a copy is K3000,”

The fertilisers distributed included 50kg of urea, 25kg of triple super phosphate, 12.5kg of multi super phosphate, K20,000 for seed paddy of pure stock and K30,000 for agricultural expenditure including labour costs.

“At the university, students can specialise in seafood under the subject of Food Technology and we’re thinking about offering students some scholarships to this university. We’d also offer them employment later,”

“Although arrangements for tourism cooperation between Myanmar and Indonesia haven’t been signed yet, the two countries have friendly cooperation in tourism,”

Dr Soe Lwin Nyein, the director of the ministry’s Epidemiology Department, said the department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information, will distribute educational flyers about A(H1N1) influenza to rural areas throughout the country.

The bone flute, part of a treasure trove of artifacts uncovered at the Hohle Fels Cave, was found in 12 pieces scattered over an area the size of a large plate. There are two deep, V-shaped notches carved into the end into which the musician blew.

TWO years after the release of AD 3000, Big Bag are back following the release of their fifth album, Telepunk, on June 20. Last week Timeout caught up with Big Bag’s lead singer, Han Htoo Lwin (better known as Kyar Pauk), and asked him about the new album, singing in English and writing songs about his family.
