Red Cross helps delta farmers

By Myint K
A farmer receives financial assistance from the Myanmar Red Cross Society earlier this month.

THE Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) has contributed fertilisers and financial assistance to 4000 small farmers in cyclone-affected area such as Kungyangon, Kawhmu, Twante, Dedaye, Kyaiklat and Maubin townships.

Farmers who work their own fields, of not more than five acres, received fertilisers and K50,000. The distribution of the aid was carried out between June 10 and 20, in time for the agricultural season, by the branch office of the rescue and recovery department, said Dr Aung Kyaw Htut, chief coordinator of MRCS.

An analysis of how the aid was used will be done in July.

The fertilisers distributed included 50kg of urea, 25kg of triple super phosphate, 12.5kg of multi super phosphate, K20,000 for seed paddy of pure stock and K30,000 for agricultural expenditure including labour costs.

From June 12 to 15, nearly 600 farmers from Maubin and four neighbouring villages and, from June 16 to 18, nearly 300 farmers from outlying villages of Maubin received the supplies, said manager Daw Khin Khin Soe of the Maubin branch office of the recovery department.
