JUST three teams have a realistic chance of making the the Myanmar National League Cup final on July 5, going into the final round of matches.
Undefeated Yadanarbon FC heads up the table with 14 points, while both Yangon United FC and Magway FC are a point further behind. All teams have played six matches.
Magway, the league leader for much of the season, faces the toughest challenge to make the final, with its final match to be played against Kanbawza on July 1. By that stage the Magway players will know what result is necessary to progress to the final, which will be played at Thuwanna Stadium.
Given Yadanarbon and Yangon play Okkthar United FC and Delta United FC respectively in their final matches, it’s likely Magway will need a comprehensive win over an injury-depleted Kanbawza to advance.
Kanbawza are the only other side with any chance – albeit a slim one – of finishing in the top two. The Shan State side would have to win their final two matches – against Delta United and then the crucial Magway clash – and rely on either Yangon or Yadanarbon dropping points in their matches.
While there will be disappointment for the club that misses out on the final, there is a consolation prize, in the form of K20 million prizemoney for the third-ranked team. The MNL Cup champion will receive K50 million and the runner up K30 million. First prize will be paid by sponsor IBTC, while the second and third prizes will be given by the Myanmar Football Federation.
