“The main customers are monks and people who studied Buddhist scripture. Other readers just glanced at the piles of religious books but leave them undisturbed even though such books can supply valuable life lessons,”

“I’ve invented my own type of marionettes made from smoked deciduous wood – rather than the traditional yamanay or teak – that is lighter and prevents decay so the marionettes last longer,”

“Out of the blue, orders from Japan and South Korea have risen dramatically and it seems that consumers in those countries are opting to buy cheaper clothes,”

“A final report on the terms of reference for the ASEAN human rights mechanism, prepared by the high level working groups, is expected to be endorsed at the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on July 19,”

“This new round of grants aims at scaling up direct service provision with particular focus on lifesaving medicines such as ARV (anti-retroviral) and first-line anti-TB drugs, as well as community-based malaria control in hard-to-reach areas,”
“My ambition is to become a maritime engineer. It is my goal, not because it is a popular profession but because I enjoy working on graphs using compasses and scales,”

“For shop owners it’s important to remember that all of these other bags are more expensive than the disposable plastic bags being used before. A 9-inch [22.5-centimetre] by 18-inch [45cm] bag was about K8 each but the cheapest PP bag is K20 at least,”

“We got the idea to develop this mobile directory software when we were developing our “Defined-e” program, which has a number of physical similarities when you look at the books: They’re both quite thick and have plenty of information contained within,”

All funding from ECHO allocated to Myanmar in 2008 went to Cyclone Nargis projects, with 29 million euros ($40.5 million) allocated to humanitarian aid and 10 million euros ($14 million) to food aid.

“We already have bookings through travel agents for an average of 30pc occupancy for October but it’s hard to say what the situation will be for the travel industry for the upcoming tourist season,”

“Everybody wants to be more beautiful; an ugly feature on your face might be a great source of depression in your life, but you must be careful as there are many people whose faces have become uglier than before so people should be made aware of the risks involved with such treatment,”

RUBBER prices have been stretching upwards since early June on the back of high international demand, an official with the Myanmar Rubber Planters and Producers’ Association said last week.

“MAMA spends about K20 million on advertising per month and 60pc of that money is for television advertisements. We spend the majority of our advertising budget on television advertisements because we believe this is the most effective medium for our company,”

“It would be nice if the road could be broadened from two lanes to four. The way is also blocked when a car breaks down on the bridge, which seems to happen more frequently in the rainy season,”

Some aspects of the lighting, especially the multicoloured mood lights recessed into the ceiling won’t appeal to every taste but are not likely to offend. The downstairs living room features dark green sofas set against the off-white walls, teak parquet flooring and a lovely central rug.

This week Timeout spoke to Junny about playing percussion. Junny is currently a percussionist performing at Parkroyal Hotel.

Le’ Le’ Win is inspired by what she sees when travelling around the country with her parents. “I like to draw the things I see when I travel with my parents, such as an ancient pagoda and the peaceful countryside scenery.” Her parents intend to send her to Japan to compete in art shows.
“Aung Swe Naing, my regular rival, wasn’t completely fit for this competition. Also, Mr Myanmar, Khine Lin, did not participate and most of the competitors were from the younger generation. So, I did not have to exert myself too much in this competition,”

The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), funds relief operations for victims of natural disasters and conflicts outside the European Union. For humanitarian aid, the Commission works with about 200 operational partners, including United Nations agencies, the Red Cross/Crescent movement and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs). Aid is channelled impartially, straight to victims, regardless of their race, ethnic group, religion, gender, age, nationality or political affiliation. The incumbent would provide support in assessing humanitarian situation; in monitoring ECHO funded projects and analysing ECHO funded project’s implementation.
