Word on the Street ... Chan Chan

By Nuam Bawi

CHAN Chan, who caught people’s attention during the Melody World singing contest has carved out a successful career as a singer and actress, even appearing in some films. As she prepares to release her latest album “Ta Ke So Yin A Chit Pae Lo”, (Indeed, Love Is Needed), Timeout caught up with her last week to learn for ourselves how she is managing so many demanding pursuits.

You’ve been at a lot of fashion events recently, are you focussing on your modelling at the moment?

Yes, I’ve been doing modelling, but only the bigger shows because I am also focusing on my solo album as well.

When are you planning on releasing the album?

In January 2010.

What kind of songs are included on it?

The songs are R&B and pop.

What songs do you find the most challenging?

Rap. My voice cannot follow rap. When I sing rap my voice is like a child’s.

You are very busy modelling, singing and acting now. What do you enjoy and what irritates you?

Modelling is the most tiring as you have to give so much time so I’m a little tired with this job because of that. Singing is not like that; we just have to prepare before we sing so it’s not too bad.

Which pursuit makes you feel the proudest?

Singing is the best option for me because it is already my main career. I really hope people will notice me as a good singer.

What annoys you the most about modelling?

The most annoying thing is when we have a show and have to come early for the rehearsal. After the rehearsal we have to wait around for a long time. I am always itching for the show to begin.

How do you spend your time while waiting?

I mostly read books and listen to music. Sometimes I spend time talking with friends.

How do you look after yourself? Do you exercise?

I have never eaten high calorie foods since I was young, so it is hard for me to put on weight. When I go to the gym I only have to exercise to improve the strength of my body. This also helps my vocal power.

You sing songs with a lot of power. Do you strain it at concerts?

Yes, I have had some difficulties when performing concerts. There is a lot of shouting in my songs so I get tired singing many songs continuously.

As you are so busy with your career how do you make time for boyfriends?

Unluckily for me when I love somebody, I never look at others. But I have not received the same even though I have given my love time and time again. I always give the man priority even if I have other important projects. But I haven’t received the same reaction. Love has action and reaction like a mirror, if we smile, it smiles back.
