18th European Film festival

Nay Pyi Daw cinema in Yangon will host the 18th European Film festival from November 20 to 29.

The festival will feature 10 films, two each from Germany, France, Italy, Britain and Sweden. The films, with English subtitles, will be screened at 3.30pm and 6.30pm.

Invitations are availble starting November 13 at Alliance Francaise, 340 Pyay Road, Sanchaung township, at the German embassy, 9 Bogyoke Aung San Museum Road, Bahan township, at the Italian embassy, 3 Inya Myaing Road, Golden Valley and at The British Council, 78 Kanna Road. Invitations are exchanged for tickets free of charge starting at 9am on the day of the screening until 20 minutes before the opening credits. Each film will be screened twice during the event. Titles include: One Day in Europe, Zozo, Jean de la Fontaine, Love is in the Air, The Early Bird Catches the Worm, One Hundred Nails, Becoming Jane, Sounds Like Teen Spirit, Emma’s Bliss and The Edge of Heaven.

Japanese robot and drum show

In celebration of the closing of the Mekong-Japan exchange year, the Japanese embassy has organised a Japanese robot show and wadaiko (Japanese drums) performance on December 14 from 3pm to 5pm at the Strand hotel, 92 Strand Road, Yangon. Complimentary tickets will be available at the Japanese embassy (Information and Culture Section), tel: 549644~8. Refreshments will be served after the performance.

7th South Korean speech contest

The South Korean embassy will host the 7th South Korean Speech Contest on December 11 at 2:30pm in the Traders hotel grand ballroom, Yangon. The contest is open to entrants who have passed level 4 of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK). The registration period is from November 4 to November 13.

Ten candidates will advance to the final round. Contestants are selected through a preliminary test held on November 20 in Yangon and in Mandalay respectively.

The Speech Contest will be open to the public.

Application forms are available at the South Korean embassy in Yangon and from Mrs Chang Jeong-eun of the Korean Language Department at Mandalay University of Foreign Languages. For additional information contact the embassy at 527142~4.

‘Relay’ art exhibition

An art exhibition entitled “Relay” will be held from November 9 to 15 from 9am to 5pm at Lokanat Art Gallery, 62 Pansodan Street. Members from New Zero art space will exhibit their work.

‘Fantasy Art’ exhibition

An exhibition entitled “Fantasy Art Show” will take place from November 7 to 11 at Parkroyal hotel. Participating artists include Aung Thic, Co Thiee, Dawei Tu Tu, Han Min Htun, Hnin Dali Aung, Hla Tun, Khayay Myin Than, K.Kyaw, Kyaw San Thwin, Myo Myint Aung, Nay Aung Shu, Yan Naing Tun, Ye Min and Yi Nann Thike.
