“Almost all the frames we made sold out, there is always strong demand for those but we had trouble finding enough workers, so we cut back on our number of designs this year to save time,”

The oil will then be transported from Kyaukpyu by a 771-kilmetre line across Myanmar to Kunming in China’s Yunnan province. CNPC said the line will initially carry 240,000 barrels of oil a day but it did not say when the line would begin operating.

“For example, for fish bred in rural areas we need to have freezers present to guarantee that those fish reach centres like Yangon fresh. The same is true for transporting live freshwater fish to Yangon – we need to ensure that fresh, clean water is available all the way to Yangon,”

The design of Myanmar’s national pavilion took the prizes for “best exhibition award”, and the arrangements made to ensure the participation of about 300 exhibition staff won it the “best trade visitor organiser award” after the expo, which took place from October 20 to 24.

“We’ve had guidelines for high rise-buildings since 2003, but now we need to update them. That’s why we organised a technical consultative group with experts,”
Myanmar, once the world’s largest exporter of rice after independence, now lags far behind Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan, said Dr Maung Aung. As Myanmar looked forward to exporting a million tonnes this year, Thailand was set to export 10 million tonnes, and Vietnam about 6 million tonnes.

“Plenty of other industries, like the engineering or business fields, also have an association. I think it’s a good development for our industry because this association will be able to set an example,”

HOUSE OF THE WEEK
The house has recently been whitewashed on the sides and there are white tiles at the front. The entrance is wide and reveals a turquoise wall landing. To the right is the living room with bright pink coloured walls and pleasant teak parquet flooring.

“I participated in the meditation course last year. Some people who helped out last year are now taking the meditation course. We are happy to support them and then we also practise meditation in our free time,”

U Htike Lun Maung, the managing director of New Motion, said that while in the past most Myanmar people opted for domestic vacations during their holidays, a growing number are becoming interested in visiting other countries when they travel.

“The cyclone affected us both physically and mentally. Although we received a great deal of help from the government and various donor organisations, we are really just back to where we were before Nargis. Before the cyclone we had many needs and the cyclone made it worse,”

“But it was really bizarre looking. One of the reviewers of the study called it a monster, and I have to admit it had a face only another fly could have loved. I was thinking of making some masks based on it for Halloween.”

“The Arakan turtles here are still doing well. We manage to hatch two or three eggs a year from the single pair of adults. Another zoo in the US recently hatched them as well, so I’m hopeful that the few adults in the US will start producing offspring regularly,”

Former collaborators also sang at the concert such as Yingo, Si Thu Lwin, Chit Kaung, Alex, Myo Kyawh Myaing, E-Toe, Hay Mar Nay Win and She. Musicians who had previously played with the band, like former bassist Cin Khan Pum were also there.

“The artists didn’t intentionally deal with similar imagery and subject matter, but coincidentally, all of our pieces were connected by a thread of oriental flair. But you can see the different tastes and diverse styles of the various artists. In public exhibitions, artists normally go on a trip together and draw what they see from the same trip so the flavour might be similar. But with exhibitions organised by galleries, artists give what they have from individually planned trips,”
