NARGIS Rehabilitation Group (NRG), a domestic NGO, began rebuilding two primary schools in Dedaye township early this month, said the group’s leader, U Arthur Aung Kyaw Myint.
He said the group will pay to rebuild a monastic primary school in Thabu Chaung village, Thet Kal Kyaung village group, and another primary school in Chaung Thit village, within the Pyin Htaung Su village group.
The second school will not receive financial assistance to pay for its teaching staff and the village will be required to fund these salaries.
“We plan to spend about K10 million for each school. We earned these funds through our work with international organisations during the immediate Nargis rehabilitation.
“Our main aim is to ensure that those people living in storm-affected areas receive the full benefits from the projects that have been planned and are being carried out,” he said.
He said the schools will built on 1800 square foot plots of land and will be one storey buildings, adding that NRG hopes to have them finished by the end of this year.
“The buildings will have concrete floors, reinforced concrete support pillars and corrugated iron roofs,” he said, adding that the community or other donors would have to build the walls.
He said skilled villagers would be able to participate in the construction work.
There are 120 students in Thabu Chaung Monastic Elementary School and 72 students in the Chaung Thit primary school.
