US President Barack Obama has congratulated Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on her landslide victory and later called U Thein Sein to commend the government for holding successful elections, according to spokesmen for victor and loser.
U Win Htein, a senior official of the National League for Democracy, said Mr Obama called the NLD leader on November 11. He gave no further details of the conversation.
Yesterday morning, Mr Obama called U Thein Sein to congratulate him on the holding of a successful and “free and fair” election, according to U Ye Htut, spokesperson for the Myanmar president.
“The success of the election is a milestone for the president’s legacy. The reforms that President U Thein Sein has bravely started have brought the country a brighter future, and the government of the United States will continue to cooperate with the government of Myanmar,” U Ye Htut wrote in a post on Facebook.
Senior NLD official U Win Htein confirmed that British Prime Minister David Cameron also called Aung San Suu Kyi to express his congratulations on the NLD's landslide victory.
The White House had not commented on either of the reported telephone calls by early evening yesterday. US officials also had no immediate comment on reports that the US president might swing by Myanmar next week, for what would be his third visit, while he is in the region for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Manila.
