Adapting to the changing times

Adapting to the changing times

Myanmar Times TV (MTTV) was borne out of a necessity to adapt to changing content consumption trends and connect with a new and younger audience.

Due to the rapid pace of development in technology, the presentation of news is changing from old-fashioned paper to digital devices such as mobile phones, computers, and tablets. This left us with little choice but to start our own video arm, or get left behind.

Even though few of us had experience with video journalism and creating engaging video content, we took the plunge anyway, starting MTTV with just three people in September 2018.

Our team has more than tripled since then, and today, there are ten of us onboard. Each day, we think of creative and novel ways to present the news so our audience can stay informed through their electronic devices, even while they are on the go.

By using video, we fill our audience’s need for information in a more dynamic format while still adhering to the basic tenets of good journalism – objectivity, accuracy, and timeliness.

The current team produces breaking-news reports, investigative pieces, feature stories, and much more. In just 1.5 years, we have produced about 500 Myanmar news and feature videos. To-date, our most popular video has been the one in which we featured a local diver who retrieves  damaged ship parts from the bottom of the Yangon river. That video has generated more than 3 million views since we published the video in September 2019.

Another feature on a local reptile enthusiast who owns at least 50 different species of large lizards, snakes and spiders garnered more than 2 million views.

Together with the Myanmar Times, we seek to touch the hearts and minds of people everywhere for many years to come.

We have also successfully created at least 10 in-house programs. These include MTTV’s Exclusive Studio Panels, which feature group discussions with experts on important issues that matter to everyone. Most recently, we curated a panel of health and fitness experts, including model and influencer Thandar Hlaing and Lethwei fighter Phoe Thaw to discuss the importance of eating right and keeping fit.

Last year, we also hosted a panel of insurance experts to pick their brains on the basics of insurance, such as choosing the right policies.

We strive to deliver the best content to audiences around the country even as we learn about new technologies to help us improve our capabilities every day.  Together with the Myanmar Times, we seek to touch the hearts and minds of people everywhere for many years to come.
