Ethnic armed groups urge USDP to accept elections result

Ethnic armed groups urged on Thursday the Union Solidarity and Development Party to accept the results of the 2020 general elections so the country can move forward.

Major Sai Khan San, the spokesperson of the Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS) that signed Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) said the general election result is the wish of the people and everyone should respect it.

“The opposition parties have to accept the election result," he said. “If they think that the voting result is false, they can complain to election commission."

Saw Mya Razar Lin, the spokesperson of the Arakan Liberation Party (ALP), which is also a signatory to the NCA, also appeal to the main opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) to respect the results and start preparation for the next electoral exercise five years from now.

"We need to congratulate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy because they campaigned hard to win in the elections,” she said.

On Wednesday, the military-backed USDP demanded a new election to be held in the country to be jointly supervised by the military and the Union Election Commission.

USDP said the election was fraught with fraud and irregularities.

Partial and unofficial counts showed the NLD swept the polls winning at least 400 union parliament seats, eclipsing its performance in the 2015 polls when it first trounced the USDP by winning 390 seats.

The Pa-O National Liberation Organization (PNLO) and the All Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF), which are also signatories to the NCA, congratulated the NLD for keeping the trust and confidence of the Myanmar people.

"We credit the ruling NLD with winning the election by landslide and we hope to boost the peace process so we can end up the armed conflicts in our country that has kept us underdeveloped for decades now,” Khon Myint Tun , vice chairman of PNLO.

In a statement issued after the elections, The Arakan Army (AA), Ta’ang National Liberation Army and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, which have yet to sign the NCA, urged the NLD to remove the terrorist tag against the AA so that peace talks among them can proceed smoothly.

The government declared the AA a terrorist organization on March 23, due to its unabated attacks on civilians and non-armed employees of the government. The predominantly Buddhist ethnic Rakhine armed group has been fighting the government since November 2018.
