The 3rd session of the union parliament will be starting in early February, highlighted with the newly elected legislators meeting with the legislators of the previous parliament, a senior legislator said.
The third Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Assembly of the Union) sessions with newly elected MPs are expected to be held during the first week of February 2021, U T Khun Myat, speaker of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw said during a meeting on December 7.
“The new hluttaw meetings will be held in February next year and until then, there will be no more meetings at the old second hluttaw,” said U Lwin O0, permanent secretary at the Amyotha Hluttaw Office on December 8.
“The current parliament’s term lasts until January 31, 2021,” he added. “In the meantime, with COVID-19 and no urgent agenda to discuss, there is no plan to hold the hluttaw meetings.”
U Lwin On, however, said the actual date of when the third session will start has yet to be finalised.
In the upcoming third union parliament sessions, new Speakers and Deputy Speakers will have to be elected among the MPs.
"To call the new parliamentary meetings is the duty of the incumbent Speaker. Once the meeting is held and new Speakers and Deputy Speakers are elected, they will hand over," he added.
The Pyidaungsu Hluttaw sessions will have to be held within 90 days from the date of the election according to the law.
In this coming session, the National League for Democracy will also have to lead to form a new cabinet and seek parliamentary approvals. - Translated
